A tour bus full of passengers caught fire Monday on Indianapolis' Near Southside, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department. All of the occupants were evacuated without injury.
The fire broke out at 2:39 p.m. as the bus was eastbound on McCarty Street, just east of Meridian Street.
Firefighters arrived, and carts that were assigned to fire suppression for the Super Bowl also were dispatched to the scene.
Each cart is equipped with cold fire extinguishers and dry powder. One cart is staffed with four IFD firefighters, and another is equipped with three IFD firefighters and an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer, according to a news release from IFD Capt. Rita Burris.
The fire was put out in a few minutes with the extinguishers. The passengers were safely evacuated by the driver, firefighters said; the exact number of passengers was not immediately available.
The fire on the bus, owned by Cavallo Bus Lines, occurred in an engine compartment in the back of the vehicle.
IMPD shut down McCarty for nearly 30 minutes in both directions.
Cold fire extinguishers use a water-soluble, environmentally safe additive that enhances the water's ability to extinguish fire by breaking down the chemical reaction of fire, IFD said.
